'Pastor Jeremy
As a child, I loved to play with Transformers. They were toys that could transform from a robot to a vehicle. My friends and I loved to collect them and would race to see how fast we could “transform” them back and forth.

One Christmas I gave my parents a detailed list of which Transformers I would prefer, fully trusting my parents to find the perfect one. On Christmas morning I opened one Transformer and a generic Transformer wannabe. It was different, cheap, and nothing like a real Transformer. Guess which one I played with more? I played with the authentic Transformer because everyone prefers the real thing.

A Real Church

It is no different with church. People want a real, authentic church. The dictionary defines “authentic” as “that which can be believed or accepted, genuine, real, true to its type, conforming to an original style, method, etc.” Therefore, to be an authentic biblical community we are to confirm God’s original intention for His church.

We live in a culture that promotes image over substance and character. Politicians and the media are continually trying to paint images that are confusing and untrue. More and more people are finding it hard to discern what is true and what is not. Our culture longs for someone to be genuine and real. They long for authentic people.

The church has an opportunity to be an authentic representation of God’s love in the world.

God wants all people to be restored to a healthy relationship with Him and to each other. He has created the church to be His lighthouse of hope. That is why we want to be an authentic biblical community that genuinely represents Jesus Christ and His teachings.

What was the early church like? We get a glimpse of the early church in the Bible:

“They devoted themselves to the apostle’s teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone who had a need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all they people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” Acts 2:42-47 (NIV)

Together, we’re striving to become the kind of church described in the Bible, where there’s relevant teaching, heart-felt worship, honest friendships, constant prayer, and compassionate care for those in need. In short, we’d like to have the kind of contagious Christianity that can influence and encourage the entire community, one life at a time.
So whether you’re a spiritual seeker who’s just starting to ask questions about God, or a committed Christian who wants to sink the roots of your faith even deeper, you can find a home here at Sheldon Church of Christ.
